Introduction to British Sign Language course

24 October 2022 - 27 February 2023

We are pleased to offer 10 FREE places to members of the SUPER community to attend an online British Sign Language 16-week course led by Deaf Action on Monday evenings, 6.00 pm-8.30 pm from 24 October until 12 December, then from 9 January to 27 February 2023.

With over 5% of the world’s population having disabling hearing loss, and with 70 million people in the world whose first language or mother tongue is sign language (World Federation of the Deaf), Deaf people can feel excluded from so many community activities simply because of communication barriers. Being able to communicate with each other is the key to people working together and being able to disseminate our research as widely as possible.

The SQA Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL) will help you to develop a solid foundation of sign language, and you will also learn about deaf culture and community. Deaf Action courses are taught by qualified deaf tutors, so you’ll be learning from people who use BSL as their native language.

Course content

  • Numbers & time
  • Family and home life
  • Travelling to work
  • Holidays
  • Providing directions
  • Food & drink
  • Hobbies, activities & shopping
  • Learn how to structure sentences using BSL grammar and syntax
  • Use non-manual features (facial expression and body language)
  • Learn how to describe the placement of objects, rooms within buildings and people

Find out more and sign up here. Please note that if we receive more applications than we have spaces, we will endeavour to create an illustrative group of the SUPER community so we can ensure representation across institutions.
