I completed a BSc in Biological Sciences at Heriot-Watt University and an MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation at Edinburgh Napier University. My research background includes study of invertebrate communities and biodiversity in both marine and terrestrial systems which has led me to my PhD project, studying biodiversity in a freshwater system. My main interest is the application of research in policy and how research can be designed with management practice in mind.
Evaluating the landscape-scale benefits of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) for freshwater biodiversity
PhD aim:
- To identify the impact of SUDS ponds on biodiversity (species richness, population connectivity, and genetic diversity) within and between populations at the landscape scale.
- To produce a guidance document for management practitioners which will help to maximise the biodiversity benefits of SUDS while maintaining their function for providing ecosystem services
PhD objectives:
- To measure key features of SUDS ponds to assess their impact on local biodiversity.
- To assess the impact of SUDS features to overall connectivity of freshwater habitats in urban areas. Combining landscape resistance modelling and modelling gene flow, focusing on key native species as well as undesirable species.
- To use the collected information to provide practical guidance to influence decisions on location and design of key features to maximise biodiversity benefits of SUDS ponds.
