Although I have had a general interest in the natural world from a very young age, my academic background is in evolutionary biology, specifically population and quantitative genetics. I am mainly interested in the extent to which phenotypic traits vary as a result of ecological and evolutionary forces.

Understanding Changes in Migration Timing in Scotland’s Atlantic Salmon

PI and Institution:
Victoria Pritchard, University of the Highlands and Islands, Inverness

PhD aim:
To characterise the extent to which the adult salmon run has changed in terms of the time of year that fish return to the freshwater environment. Importantly, we will also investigate why changes may have occurred.

PhD objectives:
My collaborators and I will seek to answer the following questions:

  • How does run timing vary with conditions at sea?
  • How have previously identified large-effect loci impacted run timing, as recorded in long-term catch datasets?
  • Have changes in the run timing phenotype been caused by natural selection?
