Making the most of monkfish and megrim: survey-based assessments and sustainable exploitation

PhD Aim:

  • The aim of this project is to complement work done by the annual Scottish and Irish Anglerfish and Megrim Industry Science Survey for the assessment of these stocks.

PhD Objectives:

  • To investigate the catch selectivity and net retention probabilities for the gear used to fish monkfish.

  • To develop an age-based assessment model, previously proposed by Fernandes (ICES 2013). The sensitivity of this model to age reading bias and error, as well as to survey coverage, will be investigated.

  • To conduct a management strategy evaluation (MSE) to determine the most appropriate fishing and biomass reference points in accordance with ICES procedures.
