Research Experience Placements (REP) FAQs

Student eligibility

The NERC REP scheme is open to undergraduate students from any STEM discipline. To apply students need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You must be undertaking your first undergraduate degree studies or integrated Masters and be a registered student at the time of the placement taking place. Therefore final year undergraduates who have, or are due to, graduate are not eligible.
  • You must be a resident of the UK for the duration of the REP.
  • You must be eligible for subsequent NERC PhD funding. Details of eligibility for PhD studentships can be found here. Please note this guidance should be read in conjunction with the UKRI Training Grant Terms and Conditions and guidance documents available here.

Applications are particularly welcome from:

  • Undergraduates from groups which are currently under-represented across the SUPER DTP. This could include, but is not limited to, students from ethnic minorities, those with a disability, or from low-income backgrounds.
  • Undergraduates currently studying in a quantitative/data-based discipline who are interested in applying their skills within the environmental sciences.

REP students will be made an employee of the host University and will receive a salary for the duration of the placement at National Living Wage, as well as a contribution towards research and training expenses of up to £500.

There are no further funds available for relocation or living expenses.

How to apply

Each University hosting a REP will have their own application process. Please see the links for the placement opportunities listed on our REP webpage for more information about each project and details on how to apply.

REP students will benefit from the guidance of supervisors at the host University. A SUPER DTP PhD student will be available at the host University as well to provide mentorship.

Each REP student will be required to complete a brief report on the outcome of the placement. Further details will be sent to successful students.
