Greg Macmillan

I graduated from University of Glasgow in 2021 with BSc(Hons) Mathematics & Statistics. My final-year dissertation was focused on the environmental impact of invasive zebra mussels in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland. Having thoroughly enjoyed this research project, I was inspired to apply for a SUPER DTP studentship at University of Strathclyde, which started in October 2021.

Plankton size diversity in UK coastal waters: Observations and modelling

PhD objectives:

  • To clarify the patterns in mean size and size diversity of phyto- and zooplankton over the past 25 years and how these changes are driven by environmental variables and predator-prey interactions by analysing long-term times series data
  • To understand the underlying processes that drive these changes by building mechanistic plankton size-based models that are driven by environmental forcing
