Between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm on the Tuesday and Wednesday I will join you and use the Pomodoro timer (25 min work\, 5 min break\, after 2 hours take a 30 min break)\, but you don’t have to stick to this. You will be free to write whenever you work best\, but please keep in mind that we do expect you to come prepared to write for the majority of the stay. \n  \nAccommodation for three nights (check in at 4 pm\, check out by 11 am) including catering will come to approx. £300 pp\, and costs will be covered from your TSG. You can also claim travel costs from your TSG. There are different levels of catering available at different price points\, including a kitchen for self-catering\, and optional shared rooms\, please specify your preferences in the sign up form. \n  \nFeedback from the Spring Writing Retreat in Aviemore was excellent (4.8/5)\, and participants found it useful\, encouraging\, and productive! One participant said that it was “good to have the time where I was away from my usual space\, where I could focus on one thing”. You could work on your thesis\, literature review\, a journal paper\, conference abstract or presentation\, or the PG Cert\, but it isn’t limited to these and you can bring along any task(s) that you would like to work on. \n  \nIf you would like to join us\, please let us know by filling out this Microsoft form. We need at least 10 sign ups initially to make the booking\, but there is room for 22! \n  \nThis is not replacing the Spring Writing Retreat\, which will be held after the Annual Student Retreat in March as usual.

SUMMARY:MASTS/SUPER Graduate School 14th Annual Student Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the Annual Student Retreat! Please fill out the form that has been emailed to you by Monday 10 February at 5.00 pm. \n  \nThe goal of the Retreat is to bring you together from across your geographically dispersed institutions and to create a supportive community\, while providing informative training sessions\, talks\, and time to network. This is one of the mandatory annual Graduate School events so we expect to see you there. Please make every effort to attend and actively participate. You can find feedback from PGRs that attended previous Retreats below. \n  \nThe Retreat will be held at the Macdonald Aviemore Resort from 1.00 pm on Monday 10 March to Wednesday 12 March at 3.00 pm. Individual ensuite double rooms will be booked for you and all meals are included. If you don’t need a room or you’d like to share a room with a named person please indicate this in the free text box at the end of the form. Sessions will take place in the Peregrine Suite in the Spey Valley centre at the Resort\, a large meeting space with windows for natural light which is accessible by stairs or lift. Please find the draft programme attached for more information on the sessions. \n  \nThere is a choice of skills session on Tuesday morning\, either “Your PhD\, what next? Working out your priorities and researching your career options”\, or “Inclusion in academia”. A social activity session has been included on the Tuesday afternoon. Active options include a group walk with routes for all abilities\, bike hire as there are off-road cycle paths around the area\, or ice skating at the Resort. Indoors we will have boardgames. If you do not want to participate in the group activities\, the Resort pool and gym are open and the conference space will be available for you to work in if you wish. \n  \nPlease make your own travel arrangements to Aviemore. There is a train station a few minutes’ walk from the Resort\, or you could car-pool to reduce our carbon footprint! There is free car parking for guests. Travel expenses and childcare costs can be claimed from your TSG. \n  \nFeedback: \n“The sessions were all really engaging and relevant (and at times highly emotive -in a positive way). […] Really useful information from every session that was either directly applicable or thought provoking. Great info all round\, really well organised […]\, brilliant speakers and I took a lot away from it.” \n“I LOVED the bar stool sessions. […] The whole vibe of that evening and being in the bar was just wonderful. I enjoyed the free time sessions and Aviemore is a fantastic location. […] The time I had for external activities (enjoying the mountains etc) was perfect with the time for the retreat.” \n“I really appreciated that you invited speakers with very varied career paths\, also outside of academia. That was super interesting and a great inspiration for what is out there and possible with a phd.” \n“Really excellent accommodation and facilities makes for a comfortable stay.”

SUMMARY:Spring Writing Retreat
DESCRIPTION:We will hire a room for two full days following the Annual Student Retreat from 8.00 am until late to dedicate to writing. Between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm a member of staff will join you and use the Pomodoro timer (25 min work\, 5 min break\, after 2 hours take a 30 min break)\, but you don’t have to stay for the entire day\, or if you need to take a break at an ‘unscheduled’ time. \n  \nWe anticipate the Writing Retreat will be approx. £300-400 pp\, including accommodation for Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 March\, breakfasts\, and room hire\, and costs will be covered from your TSG. Travel and subsistence costs can also be claimed from your TSG. \n  \nFeedback from the last Spring Writing Retreat in Aviemore was excellent (4.8/5)\, and participants particularly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and said it helped them get things done! They worked on their thesis\, literature review\, conference abstract or presentation\, and the PG Cert\, but it isn’t limited to these and you can bring along any task you like. Some feedback from the Autumn Writing Retreat: “I found it very productive and the timeframe worked really well\, I think two full days of focussed work without having to worry about other aspects of daily life was really beneficial.” \n  \nIf this would be something you would be interested in\, please sign up using the link that has been emailed to you.
