DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the Annual Student Retreat! Please fill out the Microsoft Form that has been sent to your inbox by Friday 23 February at 5.00 pm. \nThis is one of the mandatory core Graduate School events so we expect to see you there. Please make every effort to attend and actively participate. If you have extenuating circumstances please let us know by email via superdtp@st-andrews.ac.uk. \nThe goal of the Retreat is to bring you together from across your geographically dispersed institutions and to create a supportive community\, while providing informative training sessions\, talks\, and time to network. You can find feedback from PGRs that attended previous Retreats below.  \nThe Retreat will be held at the Macdonald Aviemore Resort from 1.00 pm on Monday 11 March to Wednesday 13 March at 3.30 pm. Individual ensuite rooms have been booked for you and all meals are included. Sessions will take place in the Peregrine Suite in the Spey Valley centre at the Resort\, a large meeting space with windows for natural light which is accessible by stairs or lift. Please find the programme attached for more information on the sessions. \nThere is a choice of skills session on Tuesday morning\, either Innovation and Impact\, or Grant Writing. A social activity session has been included on the Tuesday afternoon. Options include a group walk in the Craigellachie NNR with routes for all abilities\, bike hire as there are off-road cycle paths around the area\, or ice skating at the Resort. If you do not want to participate in the group activities\, the Resort pool and gym are open and the conference space will be available for you to work in if you wish. \nPlease make your own travel arrangements to Aviemore. There is a train station a few minutes’ walk from the Resort\, or you could car-pool together to reduce our carbon footprint! There is free car parking for guests. Travel expenses\, and childcare costs\, can be claimed from your TSG. \nFeedback: \n“I LOVED the bar stool sessions. […] The whole vibe of that evening and being in the bar was just wonderful. I enjoyed the free time sessions and Aviemore is a fantastic location. […] The time I had for external activities (enjoying the mountains etc) was perfect with the time for the retreat.” \n“I really appreciated that you invited speakers with very varied career paths\, also outside of academia. SUMMARY:Image Analysis ASM Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Image analysis made easy: Introduction to a new machine learning software for automatically measuring surface area and species count. \nThis workshop will present an open-source and user-friendly machine learning tool capable of measuring surface area and species count from images. The workshop will demonstrate the tool’s key features\, such as its intuitive training process\, in-built metrics calculator and model-sharing capabilities. During the workshop\, attendees will be guided through the installation of the tool and gain first-hand experience in training models on a practice dataset. The workshop is open to all and no previous experience with machine learning or image analysis is needed. Please bring your laptop and charger and make sure you have your institute’s permission to download software on your laptop \nBy the end of the workshop\, attendees will have learned how to use RootPainter to analyse still images automatically. The workshop will also help foster new collaborations between MASTS attendees on the topic of machine learning and still image analysis.

SUMMARY:Designing Multiple Driver Experiments ASM Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Designing experiments that measure the response of marine organisms to multiple simultaneous environmental changes requires a good understanding of how to translate questions about biotic response to multiple drivers into a tractable research question\, and then how to design and analyse an experiment that actually answers the question. \nThis workshop is aimed at students and early career researchers new to multiple driver experiments. It is focused on the design of manipulation (laboratory or field) experiments\, though many of the concepts are applicable to observational data. \nThis practical workshop will explore defining research questions\, designing multiple driver experiments\, and present an overview of statistical methods for analysing multiple driver experiments. Participants will work in pairs to define and design an experiment and its analysis. \n

SUMMARY:Marine Spatial Planning ASM Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This free workshop will use a role play simulation board game as an experiential learning method. PGRs will take on roles as members of government\, business\, NGOs or community organisations involved in the planning and management of marine space. The role play also provides a useful training exercise to develop transferrable skills in analysis\, communication\, negotiation and team working which are important in professional practice. The simulation also enables reflection on the challenges of implementing marine planning; managing human activities and their conflicts; and achieving cooperation\, integration and sustainability. It will also hopefully be fun! \nThe workshop will be facilitated by environmental geographer Dr Tim Stojanovic\, Senior Lecturer\, University of St Andrews\, who has a 25 year research profile in marine planning and coastal management\, and is a former chair of the MASTS Marine Planning and Governance Forum. \nIf you are interested in participating\, please save the date.

DESCRIPTION:Save the dates! \nThe ASM is the largest marine science conference in the UK\, a key event in the Graduate School calendar\, and a core element of the PG Cert programme. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to again offer 12 FREE places to members of the SUPER community to obtain a First Aid for Mental Health qualification at SCQF Level 5 led by Mental Health Scotland.\nThis online course will give you the knowledge to recognise potential early signs of poor mental health\, learn about mental health conditions\, and give you the skills to start a conversation with someone who may be struggling. \nThis is a great opportunity to help foster a compassionate workplace culture and support your peers\, as well as\, for PGRs\, increase your employability and contribute to your PG Cert! \nOver 3 weeks\, you will need to set aside just 6 hours for self study and attend two 1.5-hour live sessions on Tuesday 7 and Tuesday 14 November from 12.30 pm to solidify your learning. There will then be an individual 30-40 min assessment on Tuesday 21 or Thursday 23 November. \nUpon completion the qualification is valid for three years and you will be provided with additional resources which are accessible indefinitely to support you. \nFind out more and sign up. SUMMARY:Software Carpentry Training Course
DESCRIPTION:The MASTS Numerical and Experimental Hydrodynamic Modelling (NEHM) forum invite SUPER DTP PGRs to 2 days of software training. \nThe training will be delivered by Paddy McCann from the University of St Andrews Research Computing Team and will focus on the use of Git version control software\, the Linux command line\, and scientific programming with Python. The course structure will follow standard Software Carpentry courses but may be tailored slightly for the marine science and ocean modelling attendees. We will also be combining the training with an evening NEHM showcase event and dinner\, enabling attendees to communicate their NEHM related research and/or ideas to the forum. \nThe course is offered free of charge but travel and subsistence costs are the responsibility of participants. PGRs can use their Research Training Grants (please confirm supervisor agreement to costs when applying) or their SUPER TSG to attend. \nThe course is open to 20 people. If you would like to attend please complete this form before close on Monday 31 July. The form includes a section asking you for a short paragraph explaining why you would like to attend and deserve a place. \nWe are also looking for demonstrators\, so if you feel you have appropriate expertise and would like to demonstrate and participate in the NEHM showcase event\, please do get in touch with Rory. SUMMARY:How to improve inclusion in academia with Dr Claire Malone
DESCRIPTION:This free webinar was arranged by the Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) Working Group\, as part of the Graduate School Student Committee\, and will be led by Dr Claire Malone\, a disabled physicist.\n\n\nDr Malone is going to give an online talk to the Graduate School community focusing on the environment for underrepresented groups in STEM\, in particular the disabled and LGBTQ+ communities\, drawing from personal experience in academia. Dr Malone shall discuss the types of barriers that disabled people can face in accessing academia such as physical\, technological and academic/social isolation\, and will then examine what institutions can do to break down these barriers with a person-centred approach and the creation of support networks.\n\n\nAll from the community are welcomed and encouraged to attend; PIs\, supervisors\, and PGRs.\n\n\nSign up via Microsoft Forms so we know who to expect on the day.

DESCRIPTION:This free workshop will focus on the process of identifying key stakeholders\, evaluating stakeholder interests and influence\, approaching engagement with different groups of stakeholders and discussing the risks and benefits that can arise from stakeholder engagement. \nThe session will be led by Dr Hannah Lee\, a recent MASTS graduate. Following her PhD on blue carbon and shellfish beds Hannah has been working with the charity Plantlife on the Dynamic Dunescapes project in Wales. As the Wales People Engagement Officer Hannah engages with stakeholders from across the project to raise awareness of sand dunes as a space for exploration and education and support sand dune conservation activities across the project’s 12 sites.
